Secret Wars: A Way too Early Prediction of What's Next for The MCU

May 02, 2018 by William Solomon in Movie Reviews

After watching Avengers: Infinity War, I was left with so much joy and optimism for the future of the genre (something I didn't feel after watching Justice League), and I started thinking about what's next for the MCU after they inevitably defeat Thanos and bring back all your favorite heroes that (SPOILER) cease to exist at the end of the movie. Who's going to be the "man in the chair" that shows up in the end credit scenes for the next 10 year? What is Marvel going to build towards after such an amazing villain like Thanos? And how does Disney's purchase of 20th Century Fox fit into these plans? My guess is as good as anyone's, maybe a lil' better than most, but I believe the next step for the MCU is Secret Wars. Secret Wars was a huge 12 issue crossover event that first released in 1984, where heroes like Spider-Man, Iron Man (Rhodey), the Fantastic Four, and X-Men were snatched from their respective comic panels and sent to a distant planet, called Battleworld to fight villains like the Dr. Von Doom, Galactus, and Doc Oct, in a great battle of Good vs. Evil. Now, who were they snatched? Who wants to see this great battle? The Beyonder. A Cosmic Entity who, at the time this story first released, was the most powerful character in the Marvel Universe. He posses interdimensional powers, that I believe Kevin Feige will use to incorporate the Fantastic Four universe and the X-Men Universe. I first predicted the merging of 20th Centruy Fox's X-Men and the MCU's Avengers after Ultron when Quick Silver, and obvious fan favorite in both X-Men and Avengers was killed off. Then in X-Men: Appocalypse, Magneto's daughter, who would have grown up to be Scarlet Witch, was killed off as well. THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE. Those deaths were necessary sacrifices for this merger to be possible.

Power Man Coming To Netflix September 30th

July 02, 2016 by William Solomon in Television Reviews

The already extensive Marvel extended universe gets even bigger with Power Man set to release on September 30th this year on Netflix! All of us, here, are extremely excited for this show, seeing as we all of the contributors at nerdy.mango are all young African-American men, it's always exciting to see a super hero that looks like us brought to the forefront (i.e. Static Shock). We are also very excited to see what kind of tone Marvel will give the show, because the tone and feel of the Netflix original series have been almost polar opposites of the Marvel cinematic productions. They have been darker, grittier, more realistic, where as the movies are more colorful, upbeat, and "quipful." Hopefully they keep the same tone and feel as in 'Jessica Jones' and 'Daredevil,' because I've really enjoyed the world they've created for these characters. It adds more of sense of realism and urgency.

Donald Glover Cast in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'

June 29, 2016 by William Solomon in Movie Reviews

Nerds are finally getting what we want! Even if it is not exactly what we wanted. Donald Glover, a few days ago, was just cast in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming,' the latest Spider-Man reboot starring Tom Holland. His role in the film is being kept a secret, and it seems Marvel is doing this intentionally. And when the director, Jon Watts was asked about Donald Glover's role in the movie, by the Daily Beast, he said:

“I can’t talk about anything like that! That would have been so amazing, if I’d just completely spilled some secret like that by accident.  I probably can’t say anything. There’s a little sniper dot on me at all times, just in case. They’ll hit me with a tranq dart.”

So, obviously, this secret is a big one, maybe even bigger than Spider-Man showing up in 'Captain America: Civil War.' The only thing we can do know is that we know nothing, so all we can do is speculate.

Donald Glover has expressed interest in being in a Spider-Man adaptation ever since they started casting for 'The Amazing Spider-Man' starring Andrew Garfield, back in 2010. Twitter, including myself, went crazy and celebrated the idea of Donald Glover playing Miles Morales, the current Spider-Man in the Ultimate Universe of Marvel Comics. There were Reddit debates, Twitter campaigns, and petitions supporting the idea of Glover playing Spider-Man, but in the end the execs and producers at Sony said that Peter Parker is Spider-Man and that would not change anytime soon. Personally I would have loved to see someone else, especially Miles Morales, take the mantle of Spider-Man on the big screen, because like I have said before, change in comic books and comic book movies is good and keeps them fresh. They have not even announced what kind of role Donald Glover will have in the movie, but people are still extremely excited about his being in the movie and the thought of change.

What role could Glover possibly be playing? He might be too old to be a peer of Peter Parker's, because the movie will be centered around Parker's teenage years, and he might even be too old to be Miles Morales, unless they stray from the source material and make Miles a young adult and not teenager (God I hope they stray from the source material this one time). There have been unsubstantiated rumors that he would be a love interest of Aunt May or even a secondary villain. Again those rumors are unsubstantiated, and, hopefully, wrong, because I really want to see Miles Morales on the big screen. Honestly, I just want to see a Black Panther/Black Spider-Man team-up movie. Make it happen Marvel!

Review: Deadpool v Gambit #1

June 29, 2016 by William Solomon

The Deadpool v Gambit mini-series kicked off yesterday, and it had all the elements of a classic "Deadpool vs." comic. It starts out with Deadpool waiting in line for coffee, at Work Juice, of course talking to himself, making a reference to something of cultural importance. This time he was muttering to himself about how Sartre, a French philosopher and playwright, was wrong when he said, "hell is other people," but Deadpool continues by saying, "Hell is the best coffee in town being featured in 'Time Out New York... Because the lines are just... Wait! Sartre was right!" He kind of misinterpreted the famous quote by Jean Paul Sartre, but it is Deadpool, and the reference makes, because not everyone is going to know what the quote is really trying to say.

After Deadpool realizes that Sartre is right, Gambit, who is few spots in line ahead of Deeadpool, realizes that they are waiting in the same line and greets him. At this point it appears as though that thy are going to fight; Gambit charges his cards with kinetic energy, ready to throw them, and Deadpool reaches for his katana. But, instead of fighting they set the scene for flashback sequence, from the last time they saw each other. Deadpool starts it off by saying, "Last time [we saw each other] was that thing with Spider-Man and Daredevil, right?" The flashback begins with Spider-Man, in a button up shirt, pants, and sports jacket, with his "Spidey-Suit" and mask on underneath, in a museum looking at a clay-stone artifact, talking to a little girl about how he lives in the best city in the world, but never takes advantage of it.

Then at that moment he is hit in the head by one of Daredevil's batons, and Daredevil says, "Spider-Man, I am mad at you!" Then the "super-hero fight" begins and the fight takes them all through midtown, running into the Jade Dragons, a theatre where a rehearsal for a musical is taking place, and a hipster street market. And the whole time they were making witty remarks and observations. One of the funniest things they talked about was their own fight and how there seems to be so many "super-hero fights." At some point during the fight Daredevil says, "A lot of super-hero fights these days come down political or philosophical differences." And Spider-Man would later say in response, "Instead of talking, it's coming to blows." Later they would both make more witty observations and references about hipster diet restrictions and why they dislike musicals, but if I sat here and tried to tell you every joke they make I would be here forever.

The whole time I was reading this fight I am sitting there anticipating and waiting for Deadpool and Gambit to join the fight some how, but they never do, because (plot twist) they were pretending to be Spider-Man and Daredevil the entire time. After finding this out, I thought to myself, "Well, it was weird that Daredevil was contributing to the banter through out the fight," but at the time, because I assumed Deadpool was narrating and giving his own interpretation of the story, I did not even question it.

Deadpool and Gambit were fighting as Spider-Man and Daredevil, because they were pulling a con for a guy named Chalmers and did not want to be recognized. Chalmers sold diamonds to criminal organizations, and through out the fight Deadpool and Gambit would break into the headquarters of these organizations and steal the diamonds back, mid-fight. Then at the end of the con, when they were celebrating and congratulating each other, Gambit notices that there is a gun taped underneath the table and in response to Deadpool asking him why they do not team up more often, he says, "Because of the inevitable double cross..." A fight then breaks out where Deadpool and Gambit completely retrace their steps and at some point they realize that they were set up by Chalmers, who ended up making off with the entire score.

Now the story comes back to the present where they both say how badly they want to take revenge on Chalmers, and seemingly out of nowhere Chalmers appears. The comic ends with all three of them sitting down drinking coffee, and Chalmers telling Deadpool and Gambit that he has another job for them, one that would be even better than the last.
